Good BBQs, Naughty Drivers

4th of July. Is it the most mortal Holiday for drivers of the year? Independence Day is near and according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety it’s one of the deadliest days for those who dare take to the roads (one of the reasons I took a train to SD for the weekend).  A press release circulating has all of us here reminding you to be safe!

Average deaths any normal day of the year: 114

On Sunday, or any July 4th, this number jumps to: 148

Law enforcement will also up its DUI checkpoints and patrols for texting/talking on a cell phone while driving — so don’t be stupid and watch out!

Malibu Seeks A Safer PCH

Trouble in paradise? A Safer PCH, the new grassroots Malibu coalition, thinks so. Susan headed to Thursday morning’s press briefing which, with Memorial Day Weekend almost here, kicked off the campaign to achieve and implement solutions for a safer Pacific Coast Highway.

All the local media showed up and covered the story!

There have been four deaths on PCH in 2010 already, including Michel Shane’s daughter Emily. Teri Love’s son Tyler was killed on PCH in 2005…Michel and Teri joined Lieutenant Tracy DeMello (a Lost Hills sheriff), members of the Malibu City Council and Public Safety Commission and Malibu Middle School rep Isaac Vandor during the press conference.

The group aims to unify Malibu’s Public Safety Commission, Malibu City Council, PCH Taskforce, Cal Trans and Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department with residents, schools and local groups.

With friends, family and an office in the ‘Bu, we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one!

Volvo Crashes Anti-Crash Car

Love us some Wired Magazine. If you didn’t hear, Volvo is releasing cars with collision warning systems. Though, this Volvo er, malfunctioned during a recent test:

What you should see here is a non-smashed Volvo feet from the vehicle…have no fear. Supposedly all the previous tests during the day worked just fine. Volvo reps say it’s a “human error” and that anyone inside would have seen the warning system and responded appropriately.

Hmmm…so this Volvo didn’t stop when it was supposed to…will there be a day when the “anti-Prius” stops when it wasn’t supposed to? Conspiracy!!!
